Rumblings and Musings of Mark Skrzypczak

ppgfreak85:

One of the BEST ad campaigns about representation I have seen.

Everyone has a backbone. Use yours.

One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.

This is me performing, “Cassandra,” at the Albany WordFest Slam (4/20/13). Big shout to Jaime Martin for recording this.

The tie makes this shirt. BTW I’m also about 40 lbs lighter in this picture than I was at the beginning of this year!

Rutgers Slam Team

Coaching the Rutgers Slam Team was one of the most enriching experience for me. They made me remember the most important thing about poetry is community. This summer it looks like we’ll already be preparing for CUPSI 2014!

This is the most confident I’ve felt in some time.

Writing Prompt: They Say Love is Blind …

“They say love is blind …”

On the surface this cliche is often abused. The point of this prompt is to breath new life into old cliche. Play with this cliche or any other cliche you are sick of hearing. Don’t be afraid to play with form or recreate our perspective on this over used line with free verse.

How I approached it:

The line was stuck in my head one morning. I realized it was five syllables and decided to play with it in haiku. This was the version I was happy with and posted it on the Head to Head Haiku group on Facebook.

They say love is blind …
Then the broken hearted
Must relearn how to see

There was an almost immediate response by Andrew “Ink” Feindt:

They say love is blind …
Everyone, I’ve ever met
Remembers my face

Seeing his response made me realize that using this line prompt in a restrictive form like haiku can be very powerful. Not only does it play with  the cliche, if done right it can paint a powerful image or story.
